Positioned within the Office of the General Counsel, Legal Affairs steadfastly upholds the Institute’s mission and values, ensuring compliance with pertinent laws, regulations and policies in achieving its academic, research, entrepreneurial, and global initiatives. Our approach is two-fold: mitigate the Institute’s legal risks while advancing the Institute's key programs and strategic goals.
Our tailored legal expertise is organized into three specialized teams, reflecting a recent restructuring that brought together four former teams into three stronger, integrated teams:
- Academic Affairs, Employment & Litigation: Established through the integration of the Student Life & Academic Affairs and Employment & Litigation teams, this team provides comprehensive counsel on academic, workplace, and litigation matters.
They support students, faculty, and staff, uphold academic freedom and due process, and serve as a primary bridge with the Attorney General’s office on litigation and employment-related issues.
- Transaction & Administration: This team combines the former Transactions & Administration and Affiliated Organizations teams.
They provide counsel on administrative and financial matters while also supporting Georgia Tech’s network of affiliated entities. Through a solutions-focused approach, they advance Institute priorities, ensure compliance with governing policies, and steward partnerships that extend Georgia Tech’s reach and impact.
- Research: Evolving from the former Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) legal team, the Research legal team now supports the Institute’s entire research enterprise, including GTRI.
They guide compliance, contracts, and risk management across research activities, helping ensure integrity, innovation, and alignment with federal, state, and Institute standards.
Legal Affairs plays a pivotal role at Georgia Tech, turning potential pitfalls into opportunities for informed decision-making. With the collective efforts of our specialized teams, prioritizing transparency, integrity and teamwork, we ensure the Institute thrives and is prepared for the demands of today’s dynamic world.
