Ethics at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech is entrusted by students, parents, taxpayers, sponsors, alumni, donors, and friends with resources and with the responsibility to fulfill our mission of education, research, public service, and economic development. This trust and responsibility require a commitment to ethical standards to assure others that our activities are executed in the best interest of those who support us and of those we serve. As an Institute, and individually as representatives of Georgia Tech, we operate with the following expected standards of conduct:

  • Honesty and transparency in all of our dealings
  • Respect for ourselves and each other
  • Excellence in all we do
  • Personal responsibility and accountability for our actions
  • Integrity in our teaching, research activities, and stewardship of the resources entrusted to us

 

Georgia Tech Code of Ethics

The executive officers, faculty, staff, student employees, and affiliated individuals at Georgia Tech are expected to abide by its policies and Code of Ethics, as well as any state, federal and, when applicable, international laws, in the performance of job-related duties. Specifically, we will:

  • Abstain from inappropriate activities that may affect the conscientious performance of our duties or that result in illicit personal gain.
  • Refuse to accept, for ourselves or our families, any favors, gifts, or privileges that might be construed by reasonable persons as influencing the performance of our assigned Institute duties.
  • Behave in a manner consistent with our institutional values.
  • Make no unauthorized commitments on behalf of the Institute.
  • Report violations of the Georgia Tech Code of Ethics through appropriate channels.

USG Ethics Policy

  1. Uphold the highest standards of intellectual honesty and integrity in the conduct of teaching, research, service and grants administration.
  2. Act as good stewards of the resources and information entrusted to our care.
  3. Perform assigned duties and professional responsibilities in such a manner so as to further the USG mission.
  4. Treat fellow employees, students and the public with dignity and respect.
  5. Refrain from discriminating against, harassing or threatening others.
  6. Comply with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and professional standards.
  7. Respect the intellectual property rights of others.
  8. Avoid improper political activities as defined in law and Board of Regents Policy.
  9. Protect human health and safety and the environment in all USG operations and activities.
  10. Report wrongdoing to the proper authorities; refrain from retaliating against those who do report violations; and cooperate fully with authorized investigations.
  11. Disclose and avoid improper conflicts of interest.
  12. Refrain from accepting any gift or thing of value in those instances prohibited by law or Board of Regents policy.
  13. Not use your position or authority improperly to advance the interests of a friend or relative.

 

Non-Retaliation Policy

Retaliation against any employee, who, in good faith, files a complaint or grievance; seeks the aid of Human Resources; testifies or participates in investigations, compliance reviews, proceedings or hearings; or opposes actual or perceived violations of policy or unlawful acts is strictly forbidden. This policy does not protect an employee who provides information that she or he knows is false, files a bad faith retaliation claim, or participates in any illegal conduct.  Georgia Tech will take timely and appropriate action, up to and including dismissal, against any employee who violates this non-retaliation policy.
